“When I die, I will go to heaven; because I’ve spent my time in hell.”

Naomee Cruz reflects on how Veterans Day affects her family.

Veteran’s Day is a holiday that is not as well celebrated as other holidays, but it is just as important if not more important than other, more celebrated holidays. Veterans play a huge role in our country’s freedom, as they have fought for what we have today. Many of us have veterans in our lives, whether it be close family members, friends, coworkers, or even neighbors. Personally, I take this day to remember both of my parents.

My mom and my dad met in the military, as they both were sanctioned in the Army. My mom was 18, and my dad was 20. After my parents were discharged, they had me. They may have not been in a war or killed anyone, but I still respect what they have done in their time in the Army. My grandpa, however, was a veteran in the Vietnam war. We don’t talk to him much, since he’s really grouchy and stern, but when we do see him, he’s always wearing a shirt with a picture of an American flag standing over a pile of rubble that says, “When I die, I will go to heaven; because I’ve spent my time in hell.”
